Long Live Democracy
With the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the situation is such that we can finally recognize the time has come for an end to the British monarchy's influence in Canada.
Since 1982, 40 years ago, our relationship has been purely ceremonial. In acknowledgement of the harm their colonialism caused globally, but more specifically to the Indigenous Peoples of Canada, and to further our own sovereignty, we will sever the final unnecessary ceremonial ties of our constitutional monarchy, making us a constitutional democracy.
Beyond the politics, Canadian taxpayers also continue to spend nearly $60 million per year[source] for the 'privilege' of being their 'subjects;' money which we believe would be much better spent providing for the needs of Indigenous Peoples.
Gone but not Forgotten
Erasing or denying history does not change it. Instead, we must actively work to remember our past mistakes to ensure a better future by not repeating them.
We will change Victoria Day to an annual national statutory holiday to remember the historical atrocities of colonialism.
Koh-i-Noor
One of the countless thousands of reminders of the violent plundering of cultural and economic treasures from around world, the Koh-i-Noor diamond[source], still held by Britain today, is a relic acquired during the violent and deadly conquest and occupation of India, and which has not been returned despite their repeated requests.
Today, the "Mountain of Light" is the centrepiece in the crown of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother[source], most recently adorning her casket during her funeral in 2002. Why does The Crown continue to prioritize adorning themselves in the cultural treasures of peoples they murdered and oppressed above reconciliation?
As part of ending the cycle of harm caused by colonialism and imperialism, we will direct Canadian museums, universities, auction houses, as other public institutions to review their inventories and begin the process of returning items of significant cultural heritage to their rightful owners for proper safekeeping and encourage our soon-to-be former monarchy to do the same.
It Wasn't Always An Option Though
“Something as curious as the monarchy won't survive unless you take account of people's attitudes. After all, if people don't want it, they won't have it.”
― King Charles III, then Charles, Prince of Wales, Duke of Edinburgh
